Astronomers and cosmologists recognize that if a set of constants in our physical universe varied by remarkably small amounts, our universe would be radically different… such as with no galaxies, stars or planets. This strongly suggests that these parameters were deliberately set to allow for the existence of a place like Earth.
Today, some recent articles show that the impact of this tuning is demonstrably even more pointedly fine-tuned to allow for life. It is remarkable that such constants make it possible that a universe could even exist that could have places where life might exist. Articles like will be described go well beyond, showing that there critically fine-tuned to allow life to exist at all in the universe. In May 2026, ScienceDaily wrote:
“Scientists may have uncovered a surprising secret behind why life exists at all. A new study suggests that the Universe’s fundamental constants — the deep physical rules that govern everything from atoms to stars — appear to sit within an incredibly narrow “sweet spot” that allows liquids to flow properly inside living cells. Even tiny shifts in these constants could make blood too thick, water too sticky, or cellular motion impossible, potentially wiping out life as we know it.” (Queen Mary University of London 2026) Link
Where did this come from? Was it from some religious pseudoscience post? No. The ScienceDaily post is based on work by Dr. Kostya Trachenko, a Queen Mary University of London physicist, originally from the Ukraine. His paper, titled: “Constraints on fundamental physical constants from bio-friendly viscosity and diffusion” was published in 2023 (Trachenko 2023). Dr. Trachenko was able to demonstrate that it is possible to evaluate the impact of fundamental physical constants to see their impact on fluid viscosity, how easily fluids will flow. Life depends on “biofriendly viscosity and diffusion setting the motion in essential life processes in and across cells”. For instance, the fluids could have been too thick and sticky or too thin, and in either case, life would not exist. The constants are not just fine-tuned to allow galaxies and planets, but life itself!
At some point, calling on random chance to explain such fortunate settings becomes a faith decision that has too little support. Did this discovery come from a religious faith? Nothing that I have seen discusses Dr. Trachenko’s religious beliefs. It seems most likely that this is a discovery from a well-qualified secular source. Sadly, he died at the age of 54 in 2025 (Zaccone 2025).
This fine-tuning of parameters is sometimes called the “anthropic principle”. Yes, the parameters are right because we are here to observe them, but that does little to explain fundamentally why they exist as they do. What are alternatives? Perhaps someday a unifying concept will be proposed that is less tightly constrained, but serves to force the other constants to fall in the tight range that they do. Nothing seems to be on the horizon, despite many years of research. Since at least 1952, it has been noted that a growing number of key constants are apparently optimized for life. The list seems to get longer, not shorter.
Cosmologists have normally worked with large scale factors, such as the universe as a whole and galaxies, etc. Trachenko is rare in thinking down more specifically to the biology. However, another book is available that looks into this, but from different angles Dr Fazale Rana’s 2021 book, “Fit for a Purpose: Does the Anthropic Principle include Biochemistry?” describes other ways in which the universe is fine-tuned in ways that make the chemistry of life possible, ways in which it is biofriendly. (Rana 2021)
If the universe is fine-tuned to allow life to exist, this means that this was a purposeful decision by a highly intelligent being. Further, our planet shows in many ways that it was optimized for life. Further, the original start of life on Earth is best explained as the result of the purposeful creation by a powerful and intelligent creator. The timing and appearance of lifeforms later over time reflects wisdorm and purpose.
The God of the Bible fits this description perfectly. This God tells us that He loves us and desires a personal relationship with us. That is of great importance!
